Final Reflection

Discuss your thoughts/feelings around giving presentations:
What has been your experience in the past and in what contexts?
Reflect on the process of practicing in front of small groups and seeing yourself on video.
What are the tips that you received that you will keep in mind for your next presentation?

I feel comfortable enough doing presentations in front of professors and students, I am a performer so it's somewhat like the same thing, most of my experiences back in grade school were hard when it came to presenting because I wasn't into it or got made fun of. Now, I look past that and am able to give a good presentation about what I'm studying.

The tips that I received are to talk slower, a little loud and not fidget as much. I feel that my presentation got the point across and was fun to do.

Quick Write

My thoughts on cheating in university are very low. Researchers (for the most part) put a lot of effort and time into sources and for a student who uses their work and says it's theirs is wrong. I am a writer and if someone stole my writing and used it as a thesis, I'd be extremely upset.

"For the majority of students cheating is out of the question because success can only be achieved through honest and hard work."

Mid-term Check-in

Questions:

1. What do you know now that you didn't know when you started the semester?

2. Give an update on your situation in your classes. Remember to try to avoid making excuses- try stay in an "active" mindset if need be, reflect on what you need to "do" to keep moving forward.

Answers:

1. I've learned that I have matured a lot since first year and I'm more focused on doing school work, rather than partying and socializing all the time. I've learned about the human mind and the different qualities such as human spirit, human heart and will/conscience of the mind, of who I am and what I'm made up of.

2. So far, I've been doing well in my classes and don't have many issues in them other than some stress and anxiety. Disability Services has been helping me quite a lot through this process. I like all my professors as well; they have all been super helpful and supportive. To keep moving forward, I need to remain having a positive attitude to work and study hard.

Committment, Motivation, and Goal Setting- Dr. Justin Roberts

Justin's talk was funny, intriguing and heartfelt. I could relate to his similar experiences of having an alcoholic father. I related to some of Justin's struggles he has in university, like I had in my first year; hence being in this class since I didn't take school seriously at all then.

His talk went over many different directions but his main motive was to 'work hard and no excuses'. He said to take school seriously, set goals, make sacrifices, show up to class and don't be afraid to speak to professors if you're having trouble. Being at the Mount, we have that advantage of being on a first name basis with profs and they are approachable since the class is small. I've had no problem speaking to my profs after class when I felt troubled or confused.

Justin also mentioned to have a good attitude and choice maker in your studies. Some thing will happen that get in the way but you have to live past them and go on with what you have chosen to do. I really enjoyed hearing what Justin had to say and got a lot out of what he said. I left the classroom feeling determined and inspired.

9 Broad Outcomes from the book "What Color is Your Parachute"

Response:

I am an artist, so I connected well to the photography, painting and fashion. Also, entertainment played a big part on my mind, such as the ability to make people laugh and bring joy into people's lives. The planet also plays a significant role in my life, how we all our environmentally conscience and who we are as human beings.

LASSI

Top 3 weaknesses:

1. Anxiety
2. Attitude
3. Concentration

I believe these are prioritized in the way they should be with anxiety at the top because I suffer from anxiety disorder and sometimes that affects my school work. I practice breathing and meditation techniques when I am stressed and I find them to be helpful and I can have fun with it. I mostly have a positive attitude but sometimes negativity gets in the way and I find it hard to focus on what is positive around me. To practice being positive, I will say positive sayings to myself to keep me motivated. My concentration isn't all the best because I find some of the work in school boring or I only pay attention to the classes that I like or I am interested in. To help better my concentration, I will pick out the parts of work I can do the best or am interested in first and then save the others, or vise versa.

Learning Experiences

  Reflection:

1. The incident I recall as being the most exciting and rewarding was being in musical theatre/drama class in junior high. This was important to me because it helped me grow as an actor and I learned a lot from my teachers.

2. The incident I recall as being the most disappointing was almost failing math class all throughout school; it affected my work and learning experience greatly.

3. The characteristics/behaviours of teachers that helped me learn were supportive, kind, positive an encouraging in my work. An example would be drama, music, history and english.

4. The characteristics/behaviours of teachers that I found most hindered my learning were teachers who were negative, rude, belittling and condescending. An example would be various math, gym and science teachers because I'm not so good in those classes.

5. The time I felt most valued and affirmed as a learner as when my teachers acknowledged and encouraged my success, such as in junior high and high school.

6. The times I felt most demeaned and patronized as a learner was when I was treated like a child, even though I'm an adult. An example again would be in subjects like math, gym and science or in general.

In my group, we figured out and the similarities and differences of how we were treated in school or what subjects we were all good at or not.
